Paintball Tanks Compressed Air
Just wondering is it possible to fill a nitrogen paintball tank with compressed air? will it hurt the tank?
i can get compressed air filled but i have to go about 50 miles for the nitrogen refill?
is that just 1 or 2 shots total or 1 or 2 shots more than the nitrogen would produce?
There are two basic types of gas used to fire paintball guns - carbon dioxide (CO2), which is stored in the tank primarily as a liquid, and compressed air, which is stored in the tank entirely as a gas.
Compressed air can be any gas that does not condense to a liquid at normal temperatures and storage pressures - Nitrogen (N2) or just regular compressed atmospheric air (much more common) are both acceptable, but you could also use a tank of compressed helium if you wanted to (although it would be expensive).
Carbon Dioxide condenses to a liquid when put under pressure at normal temperatures. So in a CO2 tank, you have mostly liquid, with some CO2 gas at about 800-1200 pounds per square inches of pressure. (Compressed air tanks store gas at 3,000 to 4,500 PSI.) As you fire your gun and use up CO2 from the tank, the pressure drops a bit, causing some of the liquid CO2 to boil off and restore the pressure. The problem with CO2 is that the boiling of the liquid takes energy, reducing the temperature in the tank. As the temperature goes down, the lower the pressure of the gas in the tank, and the harder it is for your gun to get enough CO2 to continue firing.
So you can put any gas (compressed air, N2) into a compressed air tank, but should not put CO2 in a compressed air tank (the temperature changes can damage it, and the regulator on the tank will not handle liquid CO2 very well). You can technically put compressed air inot a CO2 tank, but this is dangerous as CO2 tanks are only meant to hold 1200 PSI and most compressed air fill stations fill to 3000 or 4500 PSI and could rupture your burst disk or tank. Also, since you'd only be able to get 1200 PSI in the CO2 tank, you won't get very many shots off one tank fill. (You get more shots with CO2 at 1200 PSI because most of the CO2 is in liquid form which takes much less space.)
