What's Better For Playing Paintball: CO2 or Nitrogen?

I would fill up at a Sport Authority (A Big Commercialized Company) and they used CO2.
Now I fill up at a small paintball store and I am pretty sure they use Nitrogen.

Is there a difference with the performance of the paintball gun? Better? Worse?

Firstly High Pressure Air (HPA) and Nitrogen are not the same thing, Although they are both compressed gases. HPA is the same stuff scuba divers breath, normal compressed air, where as Nitrogen is exactly that Nitrogen.

CO2 is a "dirty" gas, in paintball it is stored in its liquid form and as such causes a few problems when the weather is cold and it does not convert to its gaseous state. It can even 'freeze' your marker if the liquid syphon's up into the internals. Most top end markers cannot use CO2.

As Erin stated you need a pressure tested container for HPA or Nitrogen and the setup cost is greater than CO2 because of it.

In general HPA is more consistent than CO2 and far gentler on your marker.
