Compressed air vs. carbon dioxide paintball guns?
I'm going to be purchasing a paintball gun because some friends of mine want to get into the sport. I went to a local hobby shop that sells paintball supplies. I asked the clerk about what would be a good starting gun. The guy told me to buy a kit that came with all the supplies, tank, mask, gun ect. I was very interested in the military look alike guns, however the man told me that the look alike guns used Compressed air rather than CO2 and would be more expensive to refill plus the kits only came with the gun. First question, Is there any performance difference between the two types of Paintball guns. secondly, couldn't i refill the Compressed air tanks my self with my air compressor i have in my garage? I'm assuming if i could refill them that the free refills would pay for the gun over time.
Okay first of all I would like to point out that you should never fill a co2 tank or a compressed air tank by yourself with out the proper equipment. an air compressor is not what you use. you use bigger tanks to fill the smaller tanks. Now I have no clue what kind of crap this hobby shop guy was talking about. The U.S. Army paintball guns work on co2 and compressed air. As a matter of fact, all guns can run on both unless the gun only runs on 12 gram co2 cartridges. I would like to explain the differences between co2 and compressed air.
Co2 is a gas that is put into a pressurized co2 tank. Due to the pressurization of the co2 gas it forms into the liquid state of matter. When you pull the trigger of your gun, the co2 is released back into the atmosphere through a quick depressurization that in turn projects your paintball forward. The big problem with co2 is it is not consistent at all. As the temperature fluctuates so does the co2. it expands and decompresses and all this other technical mumbo jumbo. And co2 is practically worthless during colder times of year.
Compressed air is pretty much exactly the opposite of co2. it projects the ball in the same way and all that. but, unlike co2, compressed air is extremely consistent thanks to the fact that it is exactly what it is called, compressed air. there is no liquid to gas issue.
Now what I would suggest for you is to find a PAINTBALL shop near you or buy online. A good sight is hustlepaintball.com
